Inviting Others Home: How to Welcome Newcomers to Your Church This Christmas
The Christmas season is one of the most beautiful times of the year for the Church. It’s a season filled with joy, hope, and the reminder that God came near through the birth of Jesus. It’s also one of the most attended times for visitors and first-time guests. People who may not normally walk through church doors are often open to attending a Christmas service—sometimes because of tradition, sometimes out of curiosity, and sometimes because they’re searching for peace. This season presents a wonderful opportunity for churches to invite others home—to experience the warmth of community and the transforming love of Christ.
Create a Welcoming First Impression
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. From the parking lot to the pew, every moment matters. A newcomer’s first ten minutes often determine whether they’ll come back again. Make sure your hospitality team is ready to serve with genuine warmth. Smiles, eye contact, and simple greetings like “We’re so glad you’re here” go a long way.
Consider the full guest experience from start to finish. Is signage clear? Are greeters available at the doors to help families find children’s check-in or restrooms? Do you have someone in the lobby ready to answer questions? Small touches—like Christmas decorations, warm lighting, or even seasonal coffee or cocoa—create an inviting atmosphere that communicates, You belong here.
Romans 15:7 encourages us, “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” True hospitality reflects the heart of Jesus. When guests experience kindness and belonging, they catch a glimpse of Christ’s love through your church.
Make the Message Personal and Hopeful
Christmas services are a perfect opportunity to share the gospel in a relatable, heartfelt way. Remember, many guests may not be familiar with church language or traditions. Keep the message centered on the simple truth that God loves them and sent His Son for them. Luke 2:10–11 says, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
This is the message people need most—the good news that Jesus came to bring light, peace, and salvation. When people feel seen and understood, they’re more open to hearing about the hope of Christ.
Equip and Empower Your Hospitality Team
Your hospitality team is on the front lines of ministry during Christmas services. Equip them to go beyond routine greetings. Train them to be attentive, patient, and prayerful. Encourage them to look for new faces, learn names, and offer help. A warm handshake, a quick tour of the church, or an invitation to sit together can ease anxiety for first-time guests.
Consider having a dedicated “Guest Central” or “Welcome Table” where visitors can stop by after service to meet leaders, ask questions, or receive a small gift. It’s not about impressing them—it’s about showing them they matter.
Follow Up with Intention
What happens after Christmas is just as important as what happens during the service. A thoughtful follow-up strategy helps newcomers stay connected. If guests filled out a connection card, reach out within 48 hours. Send a personal email, handwritten note, or text thanking them for visiting. Include an invitation to your next service, small group, or community event.
Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Consistent follow-up helps build relationships that lead to discipleship.

Welcoming newcomers isn’t just about one service—it’s about building a culture of hospitality that lasts. When your church treats every Sunday like Christmas, filled with warmth, joy, and invitation, people will keep coming back because they’ve found a place that feels like home.
