How to Lead Someone to Jesus: A Personal Guide

Back in College, I had a friend named Dustin. We had been friends for years, and our conversations often touched on faith, but it wasn’t until he hit a rough patch in his life that he truly opened up. One night, over a cup of coffee, I shared my own story of how Jesus had transformed my life. It wasn’t a dramatic, high-pressure moment, just an honest, heartfelt conversation.

And right there, he asked how he could experience that same hope. That moment changed both of our lives. Leading someone to Jesus doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about being present, showing love, and sharing the truth in a way that speaks to their heart. Here’s how you can do it too.

1. Start with Prayer

Before even starting a conversation, pray. Ask God for the right words and for the courage to share His truth. Prayer also invites the Holy Spirit into the process, and He’s the one who softens hearts. It’s not about you convincing someone; it’s about God working through you. Ask for guidance, and trust that He’ll lead you.

2. Build a Genuine Relationship

People often need to feel that you care about them as a person before they’ll be open to hearing about Jesus. Take the time to build trust. Be present in their lives, listen to their struggles, and show them love. When someone knows you genuinely care, they’ll be more likely to listen to what you have to say about Jesus.

3. Share Your Story

The most powerful way to introduce someone to Jesus is through your own story. Share how you came to know Him and the difference He’s made in your life. This isn’t about impressing them with theology; it’s about showing them the personal impact of Jesus in your life. For me, it wasn’t until I shared my own struggles and how Jesus pulled me through that Dustin started to see the hope I was talking about.

4. Clearly Share the Gospel

Once the door is open, share the simple truth of the gospel:

• God’s Love: God loves us deeply and wants a relationship with us. (John 3:16)
• Sin’s Consequence: Our sin separates us from God (Romans 3:23), but Jesus came to restore that relationship.
• Jesus’ Sacrifice: Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again to give us new life (Romans 5:8, 1 Peter 3:18).
• Salvation Through Faith: Salvation is a gift from God, and it’s received by faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Sharing this simple message allows the person to understand that Jesus is the way to true peace and forgiveness.

5. Invite Them to Respond

After sharing the gospel, invite them to make a decision. You can guide them in a prayer like this:

“Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I admit that I’ve sinned and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I invite You into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Please guide my life from now on.”

It’s not the words that save someone but the heart behind them. Encourage them to be sincere and open to what God wants to do in their life.

6. Encourage Baptism

Baptism is an important step in a believer’s journey. It’s a public declaration of faith and obedience to Jesus’ example. If the person has made the decision to follow Jesus, encourage them to take this next step. Baptism symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and represents the believer’s new life in Christ (Romans 6:4).

7. Guide Them in Spiritual Growth

Just leading someone to Jesus is only the beginning of their journey. Help them get started on the right path:

• Read the Bible: Start with the Gospels to learn about Jesus’ life and teachings. Encourage them to spend time in God’s Word daily.
• Pray Together: Teach them how to pray, and invite them to continue building their relationship with God through prayer.
• Find a Church: Encourage them to get involved in a community of believers who can support and encourage their faith.
• Seek Fellowship: Help them find other Christians who can walk alongside them, offer accountability, and share in their faith journey.

8. Be There for the Journey

Being there for someone doesn’t end once they’ve prayed the prayer. Discipleship is an ongoing process. Check in with them, pray for them, and encourage them as they grow in their new faith. I’ve walked with a number of new believers in their early days, and it’s a beautiful thing to see their faith blossom.

9. Celebrate Together

Lastly, celebrate their decision! The Bible tells us that there is rejoicing in heaven when one person comes to Christ (Luke 15:7). Take time to rejoice with them, and continue to pray that God will help them grow in their relationship with Him.

Leading someone to Jesus is a life-changing experience, both for you and the person who comes to faith. It’s a privilege to share the hope of the gospel with others. You don’t have to have all the answers or be perfect; just be willing to be used by God in someone’s life. Through love, prayer, and simple truth, God will do the rest. Remember, it’s not about your eloquence, but about sharing the message of salvation with love and sincerity.
