Getting Ready for Fall Church Kickoff 2026
Summer is almost over. The calendars are about to fill up again. School starts. Schedules tighten. Families come home from vacation. And for the church, fall becomes one of the most important seasons of the entire year.
Fall kickoff is your fresh start. It is the moment people stop drifting and start looking for community again. The question is not whether your church will have a fall. The question is whether you will be ready for it.
Start With Prayer, Not a Plan
It is tempting to jump straight to logistics. Banners. Sign up sheets. A killer worship set. None of that is wrong. But it is not where you begin.
You begin on your knees.
Jesus told his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37 to 38). Notice the order. He saw the need, and he told them to pray first. Before you plan a single event, ask God to break your heart for the people who are not yet in the room.
Ideas to Kick Off the Season
Once your heart is right, the ideas come easy. Here are a few that work.
Throw a party. Host a cookout, a block party, or a fall festival in your parking lot. Free food brings people who would never walk through your doors on a normal Sunday. Make it loud, make it fun, and make it easy to invite a neighbor.
Launch your small groups. Fall is the natural time to start new groups. People are craving connection after a busy summer. Give them a clear next step and a friendly face to follow.
Plan a serve day. Send your people into the community to rake leaves, paint fences, and love your neighbors with no strings attached. The world notices a church that shows up.
Refresh your welcome. New faces are coming. Walk your building like a first time guest. Is it obvious where to park, where to sit, and where the kids go? Small details tell people whether they matter.
Get Your Community Involved
Here is the hard truth. Most churches wait for people to come to them. They print a flyer, post it online, and hope someone shows up.
That is not the model Jesus gave us.
In the parable of the great banquet, the master tells his servant, “Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23). Go out. Not stay in. The invitation moves toward people. It does not sit and wait.
So move toward them. Knock on doors in your neighborhood and hand out invitations with a smile. Yes, it feels awkward. Do it anyway. Drop off cards at the local coffee shop. Invite the family on your street to the cookout. Ask your people to bring one person each. One invitation can change a life.
Go Knock on the Door
I know what you are thinking. Door to door feels old fashioned. It feels uncomfortable. People might be rude.
But discomfort is not a reason to stay home.
The early church did not grow because believers waited politely. They grew because ordinary people opened their mouths and their doors. “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts” (Acts 2:46). They went house to house. They made it personal.
Your neighbors are not waiting for a perfect program. They are waiting for someone to care enough to ask.
The Challenge
Fall kickoff is not really about events. It is about people. Real people with real names who live a few streets over and have never been invited.
So here is your challenge. Do not just plan a great Sunday. Go get someone for it.
Pray first. Then knock on the door.
