Worship Director for a growing, gospel-driven PCA church in the Charleston, SC region.
We are a church made up of 300-400 people with two services and planning to plant a church. We live in the fastest growing area of South Carolina near Charleston. The part-time position is planned to add more hours as the church continues to grow.
The Director of Worship Ministries is responsible for overseeing and implementing the worship services of the church and the ministries that impact the worship opportunities of the church. Important aspects of this position are leading the congregation into the presence of God so that they engage their hearts in worship, administering programs and recruiting and training volunteers. Some of the spiritual gifts that would be helpful in fulfilling this position are administration, teaching, encouragement, leadership and service. It is essential for the director to be a “team player” with the other MNC staff.
The person filling this position should be a growing Christian who has exhibited byword and action a deep faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to His Church. They need to have a good grasp of God’s grace and how that impacts a person’s life and relationship with others. If married, they must also have a healthy marriage and family relationships.
They need to have a passion for worship and desire to share that passion through personal ministry. The director must be a member of Metro North Church and agree with and champion the overall confession, mission and vision of MNC (a Reformed, missional, gospel-centered vision).
The director must have competence as a musician, possessing a basic understanding of music theory in order to communicate with musicians that play by ear and/or are formally trained, and ability to sing and either play guitar or piano, as well as orchestrate multiple musicians.
They must have an eagerness to collaborate with and learn alongside staff and volunteers. They must have a working knowledge of sound/ audio (i.e. recording sermons, running soundboard) as well as lighting.
They must have a working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn online collaboration tools such as Planning Center.
The person filling this position must read and agree to the Personnel Policy of Metro North Church.
Leads and/or oversees other leaders in all musical portions of the Sunday services,with a focus on creating a worshipful atmosphere in which worshipers can meet with and be changed by God. This includes regular services and all special services; i.e. Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday. The Senior Pastor has final approval of all elements of the worship services.
Creates an environment that celebrates various styles of music and personalities while minimizing distractions to worshiping God.
Ensures bulletin, sermon notes, Sermon Powerpoint slides are free from error.
Oversees the setup and tear down of sound and musical equipment.
Arranges for a substitute worship leader when necessary.
Selects congregational songs, Calls to Worship, Confessions of Sin, and Assurances of Pardon for each Sunday service. Songs texts are selected such that each service reflects the arc of the gospel: The grandeur of God, the beauty of grace and the hope of glorification.The theme of the service will follow the theme of the sermon text.
Regularly finds new songs for congregational worship and develops a plan to teach new songs to the congregation over time. Maintains a lead sheet library (both electronic and hard copies) and song lyric library.
Holds regular, weekly rehearsals for the purpose of training the worship team and preparing for worship services. This training will include both the musical and spiritual caring for the worship volunteers.
Schedules vocalists, musicians, sound techs, and slide operators for each Sunday service.
Maintains rosters of all active vocalists, musicians, sound techs, and slide operators.
Plan and organize worship team/s so that two services are supported
Financial Oversees the annual worship budget.
Purchases all needed sound and musical equipment.
Maintains annual CCLI, Planning Center etc. subscriptions
Purchases sheet music/audio loops/samples as needed.
Creates clear, repeatable, and sensible systems and processes for recruiting,auditioning, and training new vocalists, musicians, and production volunteers.
Oversees training and ensures competency for all musicians, vocalists, and audio/visual technicians.
Provides limited musical/vocal training for volunteer musicians/vocalists.
Recruits and oversees Charleston Southern University worship arts interns as needed.
Expands worship teams.
Oversees the Technology Team maintaining the upkeep and upgrade of all musical instruments, video, and sound equipment with the assistance of the Technology Team. Recruits members who have an interest in using art to beautify our worship space.
Oversees efforts to visually enhance our worship space with the Aesthetics Team’s input.
Oversees lighting to enhance worship experience
Develops a social media/website presence along with the Administrator for Media for Metro North Church worship.
Coordinate all audio/visual needs of other ministries as needed.
Follows up on any Connect Cards and any Connect Class ministry forms that express interest in either music or the arts.
Attends staff meetings.
Meets with senior and associate pastor for planning and evaluation.
Regularly assesses and grows the worship ministry.
Supervision: The director is a part-time position, hired by the Session and reports to the Session through the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor.
