Overview

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

To support the overall vision of DISCIPLE ministry at Epworth specifically by:

  • Leading the SPARKS children ministry and EMBER infant/toddler ministry
  • Support families of EMBER, SPARK, FUEL ministries by equipping parents to lead their children and youth spiritually.
  • Coordinating with FUEL Youth Ministry as part of GGYM (greater Gaithersburg Youth Ministry)
  • Supporting the larger discipleship vision through vital small cell groups (Life Groups)

REPORTING TO:  Senior Pastor but interfaces with Disciple Quadrant Lead(s)

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.      Personal Requirements

  • A mature relationship with Jesus as Savior and Lord
  • Regular practice of spiritual disciplines
  • A person of prayer
  • Exhibits the fruit of the Spirit and knows how to walk in the power of the Spirit
  • Strong commitment to multicultural ministry as part of Christ’s vision for the kingdom of God
  • Strong relationship skills
  • A healthy balance of work and rest in their life
  • A person of integrity who has a good reputation with those inside and outside of the church
  • In agreement with the doctrines of the United Methodist Church
  • In agreement with the Leadership Covenant of Epworth United Methodist Church

2.      Knowledge/Gifting/Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Strong abilities and experience in equipping leaders and working with teams
  • Ability to connect relationally with parents and children
  • Good teaching ability and communication skills
  • Ability to work closely with other Ministry Staff, non-paid supervisory Disciple leadership and executive leadership team and other Ministry Leaders to see that our objectives are accomplished
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategy
  • A willingness and ability to pioneer new things and inspire others to new initiatives

3.      Overarching Responsibilities

  • Help to build a discipling culture among Children, Youth, Parents and Leaders
  • Recruit and equip a team of unpaid servants in SPARK and EMBER Ministries that leads to sustainability in these ministry areas (not dependent on paid staff)
  • Create a safe environment for Children that encourages growth in spiritual maturity
  • Encourage and equip parents in their role as primary disciplers of their children. Support them in teaching and mentoring their children in a life of following Christ
  • Integrate Children into the larger church community.
  • Help foster an “extended family” atmosphere where all ages are valued and contribute
  • Work with leaders to develop a coordinated curriculum for all ages that progressively teaches and models the servant life in Christ
  • Be involved in a life group and in turn disciple others in a life group environment
  • Be involved in the community, seeking out relationships with those who do not know Christ. Modeling a missional lifestyle
  • Participate in Sunday morning ministry, including preaching when necessary
  • Help with other whole church events

4.      Building Healthy Relationships

This is a highly relational ministry and thus priority must be placed on building healthy relationships amongst children, parents and staff.

  • Know the Children in our directory by name as well as their parents’ names
  • Participate weekly in community/school events involving Youth or Children
  • Children or Youth and their parents who are new to Epworth are followed up in a timely manner and made to feel welcome
  • Develop a weekly pattern of relationship building in his/her neighborhood or with a community organization outside the church
  • Accessible to parents as a sounding board and to provide prayer and counsel when needed
  • Plan events on a regular basis that are engaging not only to church families but also those in the community

5.      Supervision

This position requires someone who enjoys seeing others succeed and grow in their leadership abilities. The Family Discipleship Pastor must first be an equipper, and secondly a doer.

  • Ensure all volunteers and paid staff (Children Ministry Lead and Infant Lead) receive training and regular feedback
  • Implement all Child Abuse and Sexual Exploitation Prevention policies across entire Disciple team
  • Hold regular meetings of adult volunteers for Sunday School, VBS, Outreach events (AABF Children Enrichment) for training, encouragement and prayer
  • Ensure Ministry Staff put together ministry plans, goals and budgets; and are evaluating progress toward those goals on a regular basis

6.      Children’s Discipleship Results

SPARKS needs to maintain the focus on making disciples who have been equipped to make other disciples. Each program needs to be evaluated on the basis of how it is contributing toward this goal. SPARKS needs to connect into FUEL knowing these transition points are often the most fragile in discipleship development. The Family Discipleship Pastor along with adult and student volunteers will plan and facilitate these programs.

  • The weekly programs are growing in participation, enthusiasm and vision
  • A growing number of adults and children are participating in life groups where they are being discipled and learning how to disciple others
  • Youth and Children are regularly participating in Sunday morning ministries, learning how to use their gifts and serving others
  • Youth and Children are serving alongside adults in Send Out Ministries and other Outward focused ministries in the community

7.      Family Discipleship Results

Families are increasingly invested in discipleship of their children and Discipleship vision of Epworth
Number of family life groups grow
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5-10 years’ experience in Youth or Children’s ministry preferred
  • Experience in raising a family would be an asset
  • Safe Sanctuary Training and Acknowledgement
  • Confidentiality Agreement
  • Background check

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bible College or Seminary degree preferred
  • Other qualifications and training will be considered
