John Maxwell has famously said, “There are no two consecutive days in a leader’s life.” Any experienced leader has gone through seasons of discontent, disillusionment, discouragement, being misunderstood, and yes – even pain.
6 Sobering Lessons on what Leaders Can Expect in 2026
Because of the success of my recent article Pain Is Not the Enemy: 3 Leadership Lessons on the Hidden Cost of Elite Performance and to help leaders properly prepare for 2026, the following are six sobering lessons on what leaders can expect in 2026:
- Everything Great Is Birthed Out of Pain
Leadership culture often celebrates results while quietly ignoring the process. We praise the trophy but skip the training. We admire the platform but overlook the preparation. Yet history, Scripture, sports, and business (and especially mothers) all agree on one unchanging truth:
Everything great is birthed out of pain.
Pain is not a detour. It is the pathway.
- Pain Has Always Preceded Purpose
Every meaningful breakthrough carries a cost.
- Muscles grow through resistance.
- Diamonds form under pressure.
- Character develops through adversity.
The same is true for leaders.
James 1:2–4 reminds us, “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (NIV). Perseverance does not arrive by accident — it is earned.
Great leaders don’t ask, “How can I avoid pain?” They ask, “What is this pain preparing me for?”
- Hard Work Separates the Interested from the Committed
Everyone wants the outcome. Few are willing to endure the process.
Hard work reveals what leaders truly value because it demands:
- Consistency when motivation fades.
- Discipline when results are delayed.
- Humility when growth feels slow.
Proverbs 14:23 states, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” (NIV) Leadership failure is rarely about lack of vision — it is usually about lack of endurance and competitive stamina.
Pain exposes the difference between leaders who are interested and leaders who are deeply invested.
- Pain Refines, It Does Not Disqualify
Many leaders misinterpret pain as a sign to stop. Wise leaders see pain as a signal to grow.
Pain teaches leaders:
- Patience when progress is invisible.
- Empathy when others struggle.
- Gratitude when success finally arrives.
Comfort often produces complacency. Struggle produces strength. Successful leaders have developed an affection for lactic acid.
The leaders we admire most are rarely the most talented — they are the most tested.
- Why Shortcuts Undermine Leadership
The longest distance between two leadership points is a shortcut. Leaders who bypass pain also bypass preparation.
Shortcuts may produce speed, but they destroy sustainability. When pressure comes — and it always does — leaders who have not endured hardship lack the internal strength to lead others through it.
Hard work builds:
- Emotional resilience.
- Decision-making confidence.
- Moral clarity under pressure.
Pain creates depth. Depth creates trust. Trust creates influence.
- Leaders Must Reframe Pain
The question is not if pain will come. The question is how leaders respond when it arrives.
Great leaders choose to believe:
- Pain is temporary.
- Growth is intentional.
- Purpose is worth the cost.
Jesus said in John 12:24, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.” (NIV). Death precedes multiplication. Pain precedes impact.
