How a Lead Pastor Can Love Their Church Well
Being a lead pastor is a sacred and weighty responsibility. You are not just preaching sermons or managing teams; you are shepherding souls. You stand in a unique position of influence, called to guide, protect, and nourish the spiritual lives of those God has entrusted to your care. The way you love your church will shape the health of your congregation, influence how people view Christ, and ultimately reflect the gospel to a watching world.
People in your church are looking not only for leadership but for genuine love that mirrors the heart of Christ. This love goes far beyond what happens on Sunday mornings. It involves consistency, compassion, humility, and a deep dependence on God. So, what does it look like to love your church well as a lead pastor?
1. Shepherd with Sacrificial Love
The call to love your church begins with a willingness to lay yourself down for others. Jesus modeled this perfectly: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Loving your church well means putting their spiritual good above your comfort. It means being present not just from the pulpit but in the hospital rooms, in crisis moments, and in the quiet encouragement of everyday life.
Your people need to know you care more about them than the Sunday production. Real love shows up when no one else sees, through phone calls, follow ups, handwritten notes, and unexpected visits. Shepherding is not a one day a week role; it is a calling that requires daily investment.
2. Preach Truth with Compassion
Loving your church does not mean avoiding hard truths. In fact, the most loving thing you can do is teach what the Bible says, even when it is difficult. Paul reminded Timothy to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). Truth without love can feel harsh, but love without truth can lead people astray. Your preaching should point people to Jesus, challenge them to grow, and remind them of the hope found in the gospel. Speak with clarity, but season your words with grace so that even correction feels like care. Do not preach to impress. Preach to transform hearts.
3. Lead with Humility and Integrity
Your church does not need a perfect pastor, but they do need an honest one. A lead pastor who leads with integrity, who apologizes when they mess up, who invites accountability, and who does not pretend to have all the answers, is someone people can trust. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” When you lead with humility, you create a culture where others feel safe to be vulnerable and honest as well. Your character will often preach louder than your sermons. Lead in a way that reflects Christ both on stage and off. Be approachable, authentic, and willing to admit when you need help.
4. Pray Regularly for Your People
One of the most overlooked ways to love your church is through prayer. Paul consistently prayed for the churches he led. He told the Philippians, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy” (Philippians 1:3-4). Praying for your people keeps your heart tender toward them. It also reminds you that they belong to God, not to you, and that you are a steward of His flock. Make intercession a rhythm in your week. Call out names, families, and situations before the Lord. Your prayers may be hidden, but their impact is eternal. A praying pastor is a loving pastor.
5. Equip and Empower Others
Loving your church also means equipping them for ministry, not doing it all yourself. Ephesians 4:12 says pastors are called “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Empowering others to lead, serve, and use their gifts not only helps the church flourish, but shows your love through trust and shared mission. It is tempting to carry the load alone, but true love invites others into the work. When people are empowered, they grow. When they grow, the church grows in strength, unity, and maturity. Encourage people to step up, give them space to learn, and celebrate their growth.
