How to Tell Your Kids About Jesus: A Guide for Christian Parents
As Christian parents, one of the greatest callings we have is to introduce our children to Jesus. This isn’t something we wait to do once they’re older; it begins early and often. Even when our children are too young to fully understand, the seeds of faith are being planted through our words, actions, and atmosphere in the home. Scripture tells us in Proverbs 22:6 (ESV), “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” From lullabies that mention Jesus to reading simple Bible stories before bed, these early touches of faith begin forming their spiritual foundation.
Telling your kids about Jesus doesn’t have to be complicated or theological. In fact, children understand love, kindness, and joy in simple, tangible ways. When your child is hurt or afraid, it’s an opportunity to introduce Jesus as their comforter. When they’re thankful or excited, you can teach them to praise Him. Keep the conversations casual and sincere. As Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (ESV) says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
More important than what you say is how you live. Children are always watching. They notice how you treat others, how you respond to stress, and how you handle failure. If you speak of God’s love but act out in anger or selfishness, a disconnect forms. But when your actions reflect your words, faith becomes real. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16 (ESV), “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Let your children see you pray, forgive others, ask for forgiveness, and give thanks to God in everyday life.
Don’t underestimate the power of confession and humility in parenting. When you fail and we all do it’s powerful to tell your kids, “I’m sorry. I lost my patience. Let’s ask Jesus to help me do better.” These moments teach that following Jesus is not about perfection, but about dependence on grace. 1 John 1:9 (ESV) reminds us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” By modeling repentance, you show your children that God’s love isn’t earned — it’s freely given.
Consistency matters. Make faith a rhythm in your home. Pray together before meals, bedtime, or whenever your child feels scared or sad. Read a verse in the morning or listen to worship music in the car. Celebrate Easter and Christmas by highlighting Jesus, not just the cultural traditions. As Psalm 78:4 (ESV) says, “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” When Jesus is naturally woven into the fabric of your family life, He becomes someone your children will know, not just know about.
Finally, remember that only God can open your child’s heart, but you play a major role in guiding them toward Him. Be patient. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom as you parent, and trust that your effort is not in vain. You’re not raising perfect children you’re raising children who know where to turn when life gets hard. Jesus said in Matthew 19:14 (ESV), “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Create a home that leads your children to His arms, one day at a time.
