Is It the Parents’ Job to Teach Their Kids About Jesus or the Church’s?
One of the most common questions Christian families face is this: Who is responsible for teaching kids about Jesus—the parents or the church? While the local church plays a vital role in a child’s spiritual development, the clear biblical answer is that it’s primarily the parents’ job to teach their kids about Jesus. The church’s role is not to replace the parents, but to support and reinforce what is already being taught at home.
Scripture is full of examples that place the responsibility of discipleship squarely on the shoulders of parents. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (ESV) says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children…” This passage doesn’t say to drop your kids off at church and hope they figure it out. It says to talk about the Lord when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise in other words, throughout your entire daily rhythm as a family.
The church is essential, but it’s not a substitute for spiritual leadership at home. Pastors and children’s ministry leaders get maybe one to two hours per week with your child. Parents, on the other hand, have hundreds of daily opportunities to model grace, speak truth, answer questions, and point their children to Christ. As Proverbs 1:8 (ESV) reminds us, “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.” The biblical pattern assumes that parents are the primary spiritual teachers.
When the church and the home work together, incredible things happen. A child who is being taught Scripture, prayer, and Christ-like behavior at home and then sees it echoed in the church finds consistency and security in their faith. But if the home is spiritually silent, and church is the only place a child hears about Jesus, faith can begin to feel like just a weekly event instead of a daily relationship. The church is meant to partner with families to equip, encourage, and help parents lead well.
Many parents may feel unqualified or overwhelmed to take this role on. But it’s not about having all the right words or being a perfect Christian. It’s about creating a home where Jesus is talked about, seen in action, and welcomed. Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) encourages fathers (and by extension, all parents), “Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” You don’t need to be a pastor to do this you just need to be present and intentional.
In short, parents are the primary disciple-makers of their children. The church is a powerful ally, but it cannot carry the full responsibility. If you are a parent, your role matters more than you may realize. And if you’re plugged into a local church, use its resources, community, and teaching to help you raise children who don’t just know about Jesus but truly follow Him.
