The Rest You Keep Skipping
You know the feeling.
It is Sunday afternoon. The lights are off. The cables are coiled. The last car has pulled out of the lot. And before you have even caught your breath, your mind is already running toward next week.
What songs? What sermon? What meeting? What fire needs putting out?
You sprint to the finish line. Then you turn around and start the race again. Week after week after week. You call it faithfulness. But sometimes it is just exhaustion wearing a nicer shirt.
God Rested First
Here is something easy to forget. The first thing God did after creating everything was stop.
“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done” (Genesis 2:2, ESV).
God did not rest because He was tired. God does not get tired. He rested to show you something. He built rest into the rhythm of the world on purpose. He made it holy.
So let me ask you. If the God of the universe paused, what makes you think you are the exception?
You Are Not the Hero of the Story
Be honest for a second. Part of why you do not rest is pride.
You think the church will fall apart without you. You think the band cannot lead without you on stage. You think the team cannot ship without you in the room.
But you are not the one holding it all together. He is.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1, ESV).
Read that again slowly. In vain. All that hustle, all that grinding, all that midnight scrambling. If you are doing it in your own strength, it is wind. You are not as essential as your anxiety tells you.
That is not an insult. That is freedom.
Jesus Pulled Away
Look at Jesus. Crowds pressed in. Needs everywhere. People reaching for Him constantly. The most important mission in history sat on His shoulders.
And what did He do?
“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray” (Luke 5:16, ESV).
He left. He walked away from the crowd. He went where it was quiet. If the Son of God needed to step back and breathe, you do not get to skip it.
Stop treating rest like a reward you have to earn. Start treating it like obedience.
Slow Down Before You Burn Out
You can only run on empty for so long. Eventually the tank hits zero. And when it does, you do not just lose your energy. You lose your joy. You lose your patience with the people you love. You lose the wonder that made you say yes to this calling in the first place.
Burnout does not announce itself. It creeps. It whispers that you are fine while it quietly hollows you out.
So slow down now. Before the crash. Before the resentment. Before you forget why you started.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, ESV).
That invitation is for you. Not the version of you who has it all together. The tired one. The stretched one. The one reading this with heavy eyes.
This Week
Take a real day off. No email. No setlist. No spreadsheet.
Sit with your family. Walk without your phone. Open your Bible just for you, not for a talk.
Let God hold what you have been white knuckling.
He has got it. He always did.
Now go rest.
