Your First 120 Days with God: A Bible Reading Plan for New Christians

Becoming a follower of Jesus is the start of a beautiful and lifelong relationship with God. Like any relationship, it grows deeper through communication and understanding. But the good news is—you don’t need to read it all at once to begin experiencing the richness of God’s Word. This Bible reading plan was created specifically for new believers, offering a step-by-step approach that builds a strong foundation, helps you stay consistent, and allows you to grow in your faith one day at a time.

Reading the Bible helps you understand who God is, what He has done through Jesus Christ, and how He invites you to live with purpose and joy. Scripture isn’t just an ancient book of stories or good advice—it is God’s living Word, full of power, promise, and guidance for your life. A Bible reading plan helps give structure to your time in the Word so you’re not aimlessly flipping through pages. Over the next 30 days, you’ll read one chapter per day from each book and then revisit key chapters to reflect on what God is teaching you. These writings show you how to walk in faith with wisdom and joy, even when life is hard. They answer questions like: How do I treat others? What does it look like to live out my faith?

Phase three is about understanding the big picture of God’s story. Many new Christians don’t know how the Old Testament connects to the New, so this phase introduces that connection through Genesis, Psalms, and Luke. Genesis lays the foundation, explaining creation, sin, and God’s covenant with His people. Psalms helps you learn how to pray, worship, and express real emotions to God. Luke retells the life of Jesus with detailed compassion. You’ll read through Genesis chapters 1 to 25, select key Psalms like 23 and 91, and then move through the first chapters of Luke. These books reveal how God’s story of redemption has always pointed to Jesus, and how His faithfulness spans all of history.

The final phase is about walking with God every day. This phase includes Proverbs, Romans, and Ephesians—three books that provide wisdom, theology, and practical encouragement. Proverbs offers daily wisdom for real life—relationships, money, work, speech, and decisions. Romans helps you understand the gospel in depth: why we need salvation, how God saves us, and how we now live in grace. Ephesians shows what it means to be part of God’s family and how we are called to live in unity, love, and spiritual strength. As you read through these books, you’ll begin to develop a rhythm of spiritual maturity and confidence in your identity in Christ.

To make the most of your reading time, begin each day with a simple prayer asking God to speak to you through His Word. Read slowly—don’t rush through it just to check off a box. Consider writing in a journal. Note what stands out to you, any questions you have, and how God is stirring your heart. Consistency is key, even if it’s just ten minutes a day. If you miss a day, don’t feel guilty—just pick back up. It’s not about perfection; it’s about relationship. If you can, find a community to read with—a friend, mentor, or church small group. Talking about what you’re learning helps it sink deeper and builds connection with others.

By the time you complete this 120-day reading plan, you’ll have a solid foundation to continue reading God’s Word with confidence. Afterward, you might want to explore more of the Gospels, the book of Acts, or the Psalms and Proverbs. You’ll find that the more you read, the more you hunger for God’s truth. The Bible becomes less of a mystery and more of a daily conversation with your Creator. Remember: this journey isn’t about gaining head knowledge—it’s about being transformed by the truth of God’s Word.
